When you think of a holiday in Italy, the first thing you think of is a tasty meal with a good glass of wine, of happy people and of 'dolce far neinte', the sweetness of doing nothing. The latter is only partially correct, especially when you take a closer look at the northern part of the country. An incredibly varied region with different landscapes pulls across the alps, all the way to the sandy beaches of the Adriatic Sea and the Riviera. There is still snow in the Dolomite mountains in June, while the swimming season has already begun on the Adriatic Sea.

The Italian alpine regions from Aostatal in the outer west, across Piemont, Lombardei, Trentino-Südtirol, Venetien and Friaul regions, all offer any activity that can be found in the mountains. While you will find excellent ski areas with everything to offer in the winter, you can walk, hike, climb, bike or mountain bike to your hearts desire in the summer. Those who prefer a swimming vacation can begin in the alps. The upper Italian lakes Garda, Lago Maggiore, Comer See, Iseo See and the Kalterer See await you.

Within just a few hours of the mountains you can reach the ocean, alternately the Adriatic or the Riviera. While the wide and kilometre long beaches dominate on the Adriatic, the beaches are a bit more narrow and cosier on the Riviera. For water sports athletes Italy offers many diverse possibilities. Whether sailing, diving, surfing or waterskiing, Italian waters won't leave you bored.

Those looking for something other than beaches and the ocean, will find a rich variety of art and culture. In Italy there is practically no region lacking a rich historical, artistic, folkloric and gastronomic attraction. However, the main cultural upper Italian cities, with highlights from the late middle ages and renaissance are: Verona, Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Vicenza, Parma, Mantua, Bergamo and of course Venice.
